Four dead, dozens injured in crash involving Cross River varsity community
Four people, including three students and a staff member of the University of Cross River State, have died following a road accident on the Calabar–Itu highway.
The crash occurred on Friday night when a coaster bus carrying students collided with a truck in Odukpani Local Government Area. University spokesperson Onen Ebri confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, stating that 24 occupants—mostly students—were involved.
Many of those on board were members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) returning from an official engagement in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
The victims have been identified as Solomon Uya, SUG director of sports; Lucky Erim, president of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association; Favour Darlington of the Department of Educational Management; and Anthony Arikpo, the driver, who was also a staff member of the institution.
Several others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at different hospitals. The university said arrangements have been made to ensure adequate medical care for the survivors.
Vice-Chancellor Francisca Bassey and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Stella Maris-Okey visited the injured students, offering support and assessing their condition.
The institution said it remains committed to the recovery and welfare of those affected.
