Kidnapped UNN SUG Director Back Home After Ransom Paid
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) community was thrown into concern following the abduction of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Director of Games, Comrade Odenigbo Chetachukwu Fredrick, and his brother.
The two were reportedly kidnapped on Wednesday, December 24, around 9 p.m., while traveling from Enugu to Abuja via Nasarawa State. News of the incident quickly spread across the campus, prompting urgent reactions from students, staff, and the public.
Family sources disclosed that the kidnappers initially demanded N100 million for their release, later reducing the amount first to N50 million and then N30 million, accompanied by threats if the ransom was not paid promptly. The situation led to widespread mobilization, with students, alumni, and members of the public offering prayers, support, and financial assistance.
Relief came early Friday, December 26, when both victims were released following the payment of a ransom. The development was confirmed by the SUG Director of Information, Comrade Ozowara Chibueze Isaac, who thanked all individuals and groups that contributed to securing their freedom.
In a statement, the SUG extended appreciation to those who called, shared information about the kidnapping, provided financial help, and offered prayers. It was confirmed that both Odenigbo and his brother were safe and en route back to Abuja.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges on major travel routes in Nigeria, raising renewed concern for the safety of travelers across states.
As of this report, both victims are in stable condition, and family and colleagues have expressed gratitude for their safe return.
