Follow-Up: Man Dies After Setting Himself On Fire Outside Trump Trial Venue
Tragedy has struck outside the New York courthouse where former US President Donald Trump’s trial is ongoing, as the man who set himself on fire has tragically passed away.
The deceased has been identified as Maxwell Azzarello from St. Augustine, Florida, aged in his mid-30s. Witnesses recounted that before the fatal act, Azzarello was seen distributing pamphlets containing conspiracy theories in a designated protest area teeming with pro and anti-Trump demonstrators. He proceeded to pour what appeared to be an alcohol-based substance on himself from a canister he carried in his bag before igniting the flames.
Efforts to extinguish the fire were made by officers and civilians present at the scene using coats and fire extinguishers, as stated by New York City Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh. Despite their valiant efforts, Azzarello succumbed to his injuries at Weill Cornell Medical Centre’s burn unit, where he had initially been listed in critical condition.
The pamphlets disseminated by Azzarello were described by NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny as “propaganda-based, almost a conspiracy theory type of pamphlet, containing information regarding a Ponzi scheme and claims that some local educational institutes are fronts for the mob.”
During the incident, four NYPD officers sustained minor injuries while responding to the scene.
This tragic event unfolded shortly after the conclusion of jury selection in Trump’s trial concerning alleged hush money payments.
In a statement, the Trump campaign extended condolences, expressing sympathy for the witnesses affected by the incident.
Eyewitnesses and first responders were deeply impacted by the distressing scene. Freelance photojournalist Ed Quinn, who was present during the incident, recounted the frantic efforts to put out the flames and the desperate pleas for help.
Authorities confirmed that Azzarello did not seem to have a specific target in mind with his actions. Police have been in contact with his family, who were unaware of his presence in New York City at the time of the tragedy.
