FG’s 50% Transport Fare Discount Faces Hurdles Amidst Low Turnout

In spite of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent approval of a 50% discount for travelers during the Christmas and New Year holidays, a significant number of passengers across Nigeria have abandoned their travel plans, citing financial constraints and other issues.

President Tinubu, on Wednesday, greenlit the substantial rebates for Nigerians using specified minibuses and luxury buses across various states. Additionally, the directive granted 100% free train trips on select routes until January 4, 2024. However, concerns arise as many anticipated the initiative to cover all commercial vehicles, leading to disappointment among drivers and passengers.

In various parts of the country, including Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Bayelsa, and beyond, reports indicate a substantial drop in passenger turnout and a surge in fares. In Lagos, despite the presidential directive, transport fares remain high, prompting individuals to rethink their travel plans for the festive season.

At Iyana-Ipaja Park, a prominent interstate station in Lagos, fully booked vehicles heading to the East reveal the impact of increased fares. Complaints arise as some operators reportedly raise prices instead of adhering to the intended discount.

In Kano, the anticipated 50% slash is yet to take effect, as confirmed during visits to luxury bus parks. Financial constraints are cited as a major reason for the reduced number of travelers, with some resorting to sending items through waybills instead of undertaking the journey.

Kaduna witnesses a dramatic decrease in travelers at motor parks, attributed to elevated transportation costs stemming from increased fuel prices. The situation remains challenging, with residents forgoing Christmas trips due to financial constraints.

Despite the declaration of free train rides, passengers without valid tickets at the Rigasa train station in Kaduna are being turned away, and black market dealers exploit the situation, selling tickets at inflated prices.

In Jos, passengers express skepticism about the implementation of the 50% discount, with some unaware of the government’s pronouncement. Operators cite economic hardships and maintenance issues as obstacles to implementing the discount.

In Yenagoa, Bayelsa, passengers are reluctant to travel due to exorbitant fares, leading to a bleak Christmas for commercial drivers who report a lack of passengers.

The Federal Government aims to support five million commuters with the 50% reduction in transport fares. The Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, emphasizes the government’s commitment to alleviating the impact of high transportation costs during the yuletide season.

As challenges persist in the implementation of the discount across various states, travelers and operators call for additional support, including a reduction in fuel prices, to ease the financial burden on citizens during this festive season.
