FG Begins Sale of 50kg Rice for N40k to Address Rising Food Costs

The federal government has launched an initiative to sell 50kg bags of rice for N40,000 to mitigate the rising cost of food. Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, announced the move on Monday at the presidential villa, stating that 20 trucks of rice have been distributed to each state.

The rice bags are available at designated centers for N40,000 each, representing a 50 percent reduction from the market price. However, Idris did not specify the exact locations of these centers.

“The president has listened to the voices of those planning protests. The message is clear: there is no need for it,” Idris said. “The president is already addressing their concerns by ensuring food availability.”

Idris emphasized that 20 trucks of rice have been allocated to state governors for distribution to those most in need. He noted that while the initial supply might not be sufficient, it is a necessary first step, with more interventions planned.

The minister also highlighted the federal government’s investments in agriculture, expecting food prices to decline as these investments take effect. He mentioned ongoing efforts in both traditional agriculture and irrigation, anticipating that these measures will help lower food costs.

Idris appealed to youths to reconsider the planned nationwide protest, urging them to recognize the government’s efforts to tackle national challenges. He stressed the potential for protests to be hijacked by violent elements and reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing issues in healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, education, and employment.

“While protesting is a democratic right, we appeal for it to be shelved to avoid potential violence. The government is working to satisfy the demands of Nigerians, but this takes time,” Idris concluded.
