Fears Grow in Taraba as Pregnant Mother, Husband, Six Children Remain Missing After Security Raid
The Chanchanji community in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State is gripped by tension as the whereabouts of Mr. Salem Mela, the chairman of the Chanchanji Peace Committee, along with his pregnant wife and their six children, remain unknown following their detention by security forces. The family was reportedly taken from their residence along Takum-Wukari Road early Wednesday morning by operatives believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army.
Local authorities and members of the Chanchanji Peace Committee have expressed grave concern over the situation, urging the security agencies responsible for the arrests to release Mr. Mela’s wife and children. They argue that while Mr. Mela’s interrogation may be necessary, detaining his innocent family members is unjust and violates basic human rights.
In a press statement released in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, John Kulenkwagh, secretary of the Chanchanji Central Youth, emphasized the peace committee’s critical role in fostering unity among the five Tiv clans under the Chanchanji ward. Formed in February, the committee’s efforts have reportedly led to significant improvements in local security, with the endorsement of key local authorities including the local government chairman, the divisional police officer of Takum, and the commanding officer of the 93 Battalion, Ada Barracks.
“Despite our unwavering commitment to promoting peace, we are now witnessing the violation of the rights of one of our key members,” the statement reads. “The arrest of Mr. Salem Mela is concerning, but even more alarming is the detention of his pregnant wife and their six children. While we understand the role of security agencies in maintaining law and order, the arrest of innocent family members who have no involvement in any alleged activities is completely unjustifiable and goes against the principles of justice and human rights.”
The Peace Committee of Chanchanji ward has called for the immediate release of the detained family members, labeling their ongoing detention as inhumane and a breach of their fundamental rights. The committee insists that the family should be informed of the detainees’ location and condition, emphasizing that they should not be subjected to further hardship.
“We urge the relevant authorities to act swiftly to rectify this situation. The Peace Committee of Chanchanji ward remains committed to its mission of promoting peace and we urge all stakeholders to uphold the values of justice, fairness, and respect for human rights in all actions,” the statement concludes.
