Family Says Convicted Ex-Pension Chief Abdulrasheed Maina in ICU After Staircase Fall
Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Team, is receiving intensive medical care in Abuja after sustaining a head injury from a fall on a staircase.
The incident happened on Tuesday evening and was confirmed on Wednesday in a statement by his media assistant, Emmanuel Ekwe. He said the fall was linked to complications from an untreated knee injury that caused Maina to lose his balance while trying to access his office.
According to Ekwe, Maina struck his head on the staircase before medical personnel on the premises provided first aid and moved him to a private hospital for urgent treatment.
He said Maina remains under close observation in intensive care. One of the attending doctors, he added, advised that an air ambulance evacuation may be considered if his condition does not stabilise soon.
Ekwe said the family has asked for privacy while treatment continues and promised updates as needed.
Maina led the Pension Reform Task Team before it was dissolved. In November 2021, he was convicted of money laundering involving about N2 billion in pension funds and sentenced to eight years in prison. He was released in February 2025 after serving part of his sentence, with prison authorities citing good conduct.
