N82million and $36,000 cash belonging to inmates stolen during raid – Kuje Prison warders

Officials of the Kuje correctional center in Abuja have said that a total of N82million and $36,000 cash belonging to wealthy inmates was stolen during the raid on the facility by persons suspected to be members of Boko Haram insurgents.

You will recall that the Correctional center was attacked by Boko Haram members who were said to have released their members who were held in the facility.

Reports have it that a prison guard had told some inmates that all the money they kept with him had been stolen. He was said to have bluntly told them that the N26 million given to him for keeps, was no longer in his possession.

An official also said, “the money has been kept for several months with at least five prison officials, including those manning the commissary.

He further said, “Yes, that is the problem we’re confronting now, some people lost money in naira while some lost in dollars.”

The official said the money belongs to wealthy individuals inside the prison.

It was further reported that hell was let loose after President Muhammadu Buhari who visited the facility for a few minutes on his way to the airport on a foreign trip to Senegal departed.

It was reported that, as the president departed the scene, prisoners began shouting that they had lost money during the raid, while some threatened violence should officials fail to return their cash.

The official said “It is those big men that are more enraged because they kept millions with the warders, about N82 million was declared missing and four people are looking for $36,000.”

He said “We don’t know what the prison management will do about the matter because the money was not kept with the warders officially,” our source added. The officials spoke under anonymity because they did not receive permission to comment on internal prison disputes.

You would recall that, the facility holds politicians including former Taraba Governor Jolly Nyame, federal lawmaker Farouk Lawan, former police chief Abba Kyari, as well as Abdulrasheed Maina.

It was reported that Abba Kyari had protested at some point sayings that he was funding a lot of activities at Kuje prisons, including monthly cable TV subscriptions.
