Falana: Why Ajaero Can’t Honor Police Summons on Terrorism Financing
Renowned human rights activist and legal counsel to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Chief Femi Falana (SAN), has explained why NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, will not be able to honor the police invitation scheduled for Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 10 a.m.
In a letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police through DCP Mohammed Ahmed Sanusi, Falana revealed that Ajaero had prior engagements on the said date, arranged before the police summons was received on Monday. The letter, which was signed by Samuel Ogala on behalf of Falana, informed the police that Ajaero would be available for questioning on Wednesday, August 29, 2024.
Falana also requested that the police provide specific details of the allegations against Ajaero, which include charges of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. The request was made in accordance with section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair hearing.
“We are Solicitors to the Nigeria Labour Congress and its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, on whose behalf we write this letter in respect of the above subject matter,” the letter stated. “He [Ajaero] is unable to honor your invitation on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, due to a prior engagement.”
The letter concluded by expressing confidence that the police would provide a prompt response to the requests, while also offering assurances of their highest regard.
