ESUT Student, Only Child of Widow, Killed by Herdsmen in Enugu
Donatus Ndubuisi, a 29-year-old student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), was laid to rest on Friday, March 7, 2025, after he was brutally killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Amofia Umuhu Eha-Amufu, Enugu State. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, especially as Ndubuisi was the only child of his widowed mother.
The tragedy occurred on February 28, 2025, when Ndubuisi, who was studying in Enugu and working as a Solar Energy technician, traveled home to visit his mother. Upon learning that she had gone to the farm to harvest cassava, he followed her to the family’s farm settlement to lend a hand. It was there, while working alongside his mother, that they were ambushed. Eyewitnesses said the assailants opened fire, and Ndubuisi was shot in the back while trying to escape.
His death is a painful echo of past violence in the region—his father was also reportedly killed by herdsmen in the same community. Local sources say the area has been plagued by attacks since 2021, leaving many families devastated and communities living in fear.
A community leader, Samuel Ede, described the killing as the “height of the carnage” that has tormented Eha-Amufu. He lamented the loss of such a promising young man and condemned the ongoing insecurity. “He was an only son, an only child. His death is not just a personal loss to his family but a tragedy for the entire community,” he said.
In response to the killing, thousands of women from seven autonomous communities staged a protest in Eha-Amufu on Thursday, demanding justice and an end to the violence. Their demonstration, filled with grief and anger, served as a powerful call for protection, accountability, and peace in a region long haunted by violence.
