Enugu: Gunmen Kill Four Police Officers in Brutal Checkpoint Attack

In a brutal attack at the popular Four Corner Junction in Ozalla, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, four Nigerian policemen were fatally shot by unidentified gunmen on Sunday. The officers were reportedly conducting a routine stop-and-search operation when the assailants launched their attack.

A community source revealed that the gunmen opened fire without warning, leaving the officers dead at the scene. A video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) shows the lifeless body of a uniformed officer lying on the expressway, with a nearby police patrol vehicle engulfed in flames.

One user on X posted the video with the caption: “Policemen just lost their lives at Four Corner Junction, Enugu state… the Expressway that leads to Imo, Abia state from Enugu.” Another user commented, “Unknown gunmen attacked the police checkpoint at Four Corners, Enugu today being Sunday and killed policemen… Tomorrow is sit-at-home in Biafra land if you know you know.”

As of this report, efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer for Enugu State, DSP Daniel Nduke, have been unsuccessful. Additionally, Mr. Dan Nwomeh, the Special Assistant on Media to Governor Peter Mbah, has not issued a statement regarding the incident.

Dr. Frank Nweke Jr., a former Information Minister and the 2023 governorship candidate for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), condemned the attack, calling it an act of wickedness. In a statement posted on his X handle, Dr. Nweke expressed his sorrow over the incident.

“Earlier today, the Ozalla community in Nkanu West LGA, Enugu, experienced the terror of so-called unknown gunmen who attacked policemen on checkpoint duty at the Four Corner Junction along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. Their patrol vehicle was also destroyed by fire,” Dr. Nweke wrote. “I extend my condolences to the families of the deceased and the men and officers of the Enugu Police Command. It is unacceptable for anyone to die in such a brutal manner while simply performing their duty to protect citizens and maintain public order.”
