EFCC Secures Conviction of OAU Undergraduates and Four Others in Internet Fraud Case
The Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully obtained the conviction and sentencing of two undergraduates from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and four others for their involvement in internet fraud.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the undergraduates, Gbolahan Khalid Adesina and Perekebena Olombeni Micah, faced charges separately before Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Osogbo. Simultaneously, the remaining four convicts, Sholagbade Taofeek Olanrewaju, Qudus Olohunnoyin Baba, Akinpelu Quadri Opeyemi, and John Oluwafimihan Adeyemo, were arraigned before Justices O.A. Adetujoye and S.O. Adeyemi of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan.
The convicted individuals adopted false identities, impersonating foreigners to carry out fraudulent activities. All six were found guilty and sentenced to various jail terms and community service.
Justice Ayo-Emmanuel handed down one-year imprisonment each to Adesina and Micah without the option of a fine. Meanwhile, Olanrewaju, Atanda, Opeyemi, and Adeyemo were sentenced to two weeks of community service each.
As part of the verdict, the convicts are required to restitute their victims and forfeit all recovered items to the Federal Government of Nigeria. Their arrests were made by EFCC operatives in connection with internet-related offenses.
