EFCC Faces Backlash as FUTA Students Allege Nighttime Raid, Arrest
Individuals believed to be operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are accused of conducting a midnight operation at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State.
Reports suggest that the operation unfolded around 2 am, with students’ lodges being targeted in what appears to be a forceful entry. Disturbing videos circulating on social media depict broken window frames, fueling allegations that some students were apprehended during the raid.
One social media user, identified as J Brandy, expressed dismay, stating, “I thought they said EFCC should not raid at nights again. This hostel (Celebrity Lodge, FUTA) is right behind mine. When will this endemic? EFCC (officials) moving like thieves at night!”
Notably, the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, had issued a directive in November to halt sting operations at night. This followed the controversial arrest of suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State, which sparked nationwide outrage.
Despite this directive, the recent incident at FUTA raises questions about the adherence to protocols. Videos circulating online even show an individual wearing an EFCC jacket during the alleged raid.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, have proven unsuccessful as of the time of this publication. Oyewale, when initially contacted, requested a callback in 20 minutes but has since not responded to subsequent calls.
