EFCC Charges Former Aviation Minister, Daughter, Son-in-law, and Firm with Multiple Offenses
Former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Abubakar Sirika, alongside his daughter, son-in-law, and their company, Al Buraq Global Investment Limited, face legal scrutiny as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brings forward charges related to the mismanagement of funds allocated for the establishment of Air Nigeria.
Sirika, who served as Minister of Aviation until April 2023, will appear before the FCT High Court Abuja to account for the substantial funds earmarked for the national airline project, which ultimately failed despite significant financial investment.
The charges brought by the EFCC against Sirika and his associates include allegations of using their positions to unduly influence contracts and unlawfully divert public funds. Specifically, the charges outline instances where Sirika allegedly favored certain companies, including Tianaero Nigeria Limited and Al Buraq Global Investment Limited, in the awarding of lucrative contracts.
The charges detail multiple counts of alleged misconduct, including the use of public office for personal gain, breach of trust, and possession of proceeds from criminal activities. Notably, the charges implicate Sirika’s daughter and son-in-law, who are employed by prominent national companies, adding complexity to the case.
The EFCC’s investigation into Sirika and others involved in the failed Air Nigeria project follows a period of scrutiny and administrative bail. While the duration of the legal proceedings remains uncertain, Sirika’s case marks a significant development, as he becomes one of the first high-ranking officials from the Buhari administration to face corruption charges from the EFCC.
