Edo Gubernatorial Election: Ighodalo Demands N20bn Damages from Oshiomhole
Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Edo State governorship election, has issued a demand for N20 billion in damages from Senator Adams Oshiomhole following alleged defamatory remarks made by the former governor.
On September 14, 2024, during a political rally in Benin City, Oshiomhole accused Ighodalo of masterminding a fraudulent scheme known as ‘Planwell’, which reportedly defrauded numerous Nigerians. In response, Ighodalo has filed a lawsuit against Oshiomhole, alleging that the claims are “baseless, false, and malicious.”
Through his legal representative, Ayo Asala, SAN, Ighodalo has demanded an immediate retraction and apology. He insists that these defamatory statements be broadcast on at least two national TV networks and published in three major newspapers. Ighodalo’s legal team contends that the allegations are a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation for political gain.
In a letter dated September 16, 2024, Ighodalo’s legal counsel highlighted the extensive media coverage of Oshiomhole’s remarks and the subsequent damage to Ighodalo’s reputation. The letter asserts that the claims against Ighodalo are unfounded and fabricated, aimed at discrediting him and influencing the outcome of the upcoming election.
Ighodalo’s lawsuit demands the payment of N20 billion in damages and warns that legal action will proceed without further notice if his demands are not met.
