Ebonyi Governor’s Father, With 30 Wives and 108 Children, Ascends Throne

Chief Ezekiel Nwifuru Nwankpu, father of Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, has been crowned the traditional ruler of Oferekpe Agbaja Autonomous Community in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Known for his prolific family life and farming success, Ezeogo Nwankpu has 30 wives and 108 children, making his ascension a significant event in the community.

Ezeogo Nwankpu currently lives with 17 of his wives, as those who were unable to bear children left the marriage. Among his children, 21 are graduates, including Governor Francis Nwifuru, who was born to the ruler’s fourth wife. Many of the graduates attribute their education to their mothers’ sacrifices.

Governor Nwifuru presented his father with a certificate and staff of office, emphasizing that the coronation adhered to Ebonyi State’s laws on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters. During the ceremony, the governor reflected on the family’s past struggles, including the loss of his uncle and the seizure of their land by villagers. The contested land now hosts the Oferekpe Agbaja Primary School II, where the coronation took place.

The governor revealed that his father’s decision to marry multiple wives stemmed from the need for companionship and support in managing his thriving farming business, particularly during times of social isolation and maltreatment by villagers. Governor Nwifuru described his father as a hospitable, hardworking man devoted to his family and community.

At the coronation, Governor Nwifuru urged his father to rule with justice, generosity, and a commitment to peace. He advised Ezeogo Nwankpu to avoid vindictiveness and to seek divine guidance in his leadership.

Prominent figures attended the event, including former governors Dr. Sam Egwu, Chief Martin Elechi, and Senator David Umahi, as well as current senators, members of the House of Representatives, and other dignitaries. Former Minister of Power, Chief Godwin Ogbaga, commended the governor for enabling the creation of new autonomous communities and facilitating his father’s coronation.
