DSS Urges Labour Groups to Abandon Nationwide Protest Plans Amidst Rising Tensions

In a press release today, the Department of State Services (DSS) has strongly advised the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their decision to conduct nationwide protests scheduled for February 27 and 28, citing concerns over potential escalation of tensions.

Director of Public Relations & Strategic Communications, Peter Afunanya, emphasized the legitimacy of peaceful protests but urged organized labor to prioritize dialogue and negotiation over disruptive demonstrations. The DSS expressed apprehension that certain elements might exploit the protests to incite violence, exacerbating the socio-economic challenges already facing the nation.

Afunanya underscored ongoing efforts by all levels of government to address economic difficulties and called for public support and patience. Quoting the esteemed poet JP Clark, he warned against underestimating the potential dangers of escalated conflicts, emphasizing the need to protect internal stability and unity.

The DSS further called on various sectors, including political parties, religious and traditional institutions, civil society, and parents, to discourage violence and promote leadership during these challenging times. The security agency vowed to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies to ensure lasting peace in the country, firmly opposing violence as a solution to present challenges.

As the nation grapples with economic, political, and social issues, the DSS appeals to citizens to remain vigilant, discouraging any attempts by disruptive forces to jeopardize the peace of the nation.
