DSS Releases #EndBadGovernance Protesters Following DG’s Directive

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released protesters detained during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations held across Nigeria from August 1 to 10, 2024. The protests, which focused on issues of hunger and governance, saw numerous citizens arrested nationwide.

This action follows a directive issued by the new Director-General of the DSS, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, who instructed that all protesters cleared of any wrongdoing be immediately released. According to a reliable security source, the DSS chief gave the order on September 19, 2024, emphasizing the importance of respecting citizens’ rights.

The source confirmed that six individuals detained in Kaduna were promptly released. However, three others remain in custody as they face prosecution for offenses where prima facie cases have been established.

The DSS, under Ajayi’s leadership, has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law, acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful protest. The security source further emphasized the agency’s resolve to investigate and prosecute anyone who exploits these rights for criminal activities.

One of the released protesters, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed gratitude for the humane approach of the DSS during the investigation and voiced optimism about future engagements with the agency.
