Disquiet Over Tinubu’s Appointments Sparks Concerns of Cronyism, Exclusion
There is a palpable disquiet reverberating through the political landscape following recent appointments made by President Bola Tinubu. Critics argue that these appointments seem to prioritize loyalty over competence, directly contradicting Tinubu’s earlier pledge to base appointments on merit alone.
Just a month after clinching victory in the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu emphatically declared his commitment to forming a government based on national competence, rather than political affiliations. He pledged to assemble a diverse team of skilled individuals from across Nigeria to steer the nation towards prosperity and justice, irrespective of religious or ethnic backgrounds.
However, as the dust settles on his appointments, concerns are mounting over what some perceive as a pattern of favoritism towards close allies and family members. Critics point to appointments like that of Oyetunde Ojo, Tinubu’s son-in-law, as CEO of the Federal Housing Authority, and Temitope Ilori, daughter of Chief Bisi Akande, as Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, among others, as evidence of nepotism.
Moreover, questions have been raised regarding the transparency of the vetting process, with some nominations being withdrawn due to public backlash. Observers note that these actions echo criticisms faced by former President Muhammadu Buhari for similar tendencies towards cronyism.
Amidst these murmurs of discontent, members of Tinubu’s own party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), are voicing their disappointment. Many feel sidelined, with promises of political patronage yet to materialize. Some fear that Tinubu’s perceived favoritism could jeopardize his ambitions for the 2027 presidential race.
In response to these criticisms, Tinubu’s camp argues that such appointments are commonplace globally and emphasize the importance of qualifications over personal connections. They point to examples like President John F. Kennedy appointing his brother as attorney-general and President Donald Trump appointing his son-in-law.
However, skeptics draw parallels between Tinubu’s appointments and those made during the Buhari administration, raising concerns about a recurring pattern of cronyism.
As the debate rages on, all eyes are on Tinubu to see how he navigates these choppy political waters, with the specter of past criticisms looming large over his administration’s decisions.
