Peter Obi: ‘We Pledged to Reconstruct Nigeria, Not Labour Party’—Explanation for National Convention Absence

In a recent statement addressing the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, emphasized that his commitment lies in the rebuilding of Nigeria rather than the formation of a new political entity.

Speaking on X Space hosted by Parallel Facts, Obi explained his absence from the LP’s National Convention in Anambra State, citing the failure of the party leadership, led by Julius Abure, to engage in extensive consultations with key stakeholders beforehand.

“It is imperative that the right steps be taken to salvage the party,” Obi asserted, highlighting his fervor for revitalizing Nigeria as opposed to solely focusing on the Labour Party’s internal affairs.

“We pledged to reconstruct Nigeria, not to establish a new Labour Party,” Obi affirmed, elucidating his perspective on the matter.

Nevertheless, Abure secured reelection during the contentious national convention held in Anambra State, further deepening the rift within the party.
