Demolition: We Won’t Succumb to Propaganda, Blackmail, Threat – Lagos Govt. Vows

In the face of criticism and accusations of ethnic bias, the Lagos State Government remains resolute in its commitment to enforcing environmental laws, leading to the demolition of several buildings in Lekki and other areas. These structures, constructed on drainage channels, are deemed hazardous to public safety, with the government emphasizing the need to prevent flooding.

While the demolition drive has sparked controversy, with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi expressing concern over the hardship imposed on citizens, the Lagos State Government insists that emotions and propaganda will not deter its course of action.

Addressing the ongoing demolitions, Obi lamented the impact on the poor, highlighting instances where properties being razed were the lifelong savings and retirement homes of the elderly and incapacitated. He urged governments involved to consider the prevailing economic hardship and approach their actions with compassion.

In response, Lagos Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, took to Twitter to assert the government’s stance. Wahab declared, “We are not going to bow to any propaganda, blackmail, or threat. No one can break the law and still benefit from it. The law will take its course. The era of ‘anyhowness’ is completely over!”

Wahab emphasized a commitment to impartiality, stating, “I don’t see ethnicity, I don’t see tribe, I don’t see colors. I see the law and the right things to be done.” The government remains resolute, adamant that enforcing sensible regulations is essential, even in the face of public opposition and appeals for compassion. Many buildings across the state are still marked for demolition as the Lagos State Government stands firm in its pursuit of strict adherence to environmental laws.
