Insider Involvement Suspected in Brutal Murder of Ogun Finance Director

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has revealed suspicions of internal involvement in the brutal murder of Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance in Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office. Oyekanmi was fatally shot on Wednesday while returning from a bank where he had withdrawn funds for the state.

Commissioner Alamutu, in a telephone interview, expressed concern over the premeditated nature of the crime. He questioned how the armed robbers were well-equipped with a sledgehammer to breach the bullion van, suggesting that insiders may have provided critical information. The police are actively investigating the incident, aiming to apprehend the perpetrators who arrived in a Toyota Corolla with concealed identities.

Oyekanmi, who withdrew a substantial sum of N112.335 million from Fidelity Bank and Sterling Bank, fell victim to the assailants on the Kuto flyover. The bullion van, lacking police escort at the time, was ambushed, and Oyekanmi was identified and shot dead with an AK-47 rifle among the occupants.

Inspector Rasheed Adegbite, the mobile police officer supposed to accompany the bullion van, had reportedly traveled without permission and has since been arrested for investigation.

Reactions to the incident have started pouring in, with legal practitioner Femi Aina questioning the lack of a police escort for such a significant cash transfer. He suggested that the state government’s negligence may have contributed to Oyekanmi’s death. A call for the reconsideration of the Commissioner for Finance’s position was made, emphasizing the duty of employers to ensure the safety of their employees.

National Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Olaposi Oginni, criticized the security architecture of Ogun State and called for an immediate change in leadership within the state’s security agencies. He deemed the broad-daylight attack on the bullion van near the Governor’s office as unacceptable.

As the investigation unfolds, concerns over the security collapse in Ogun State persist, leaving the community in anticipation of further updates from the state police command.
