Defying Court Order: Governor Makinde’s Move in Presenting Staff of Office to Aseyin Raises Eyebrows

In a move that defies a court order, Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State presented the staff of office to the new Aseyin, Oba Sefiu Oyebola, yesterday, sparking controversy amid a pending court case challenging the selection process.

The legal battle, currently before the Oyo State High Court, questions the legitimacy of the new traditional ruler’s appointment. A.G. Adeniran, a legal practitioner, had previously advised Governor Makinde against proceeding with the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of justice, peace, and good governance.

Adeniran pointed out the ongoing case (suit no: HOI/04/2023) before the Oyo State High Court, situated in Iseyin, and urged the state government to exercise caution in light of the contested succession to the ancient town’s throne.

Despite these legal concerns, Governor Makinde handed over the staff of office to Oba Sefiu Oyebola. During the ceremony, Makinde expressed his commitment to the development of Iseyin, emphasizing the town’s untapped potential for growth.

“Iseyin is a town with great potential. I am committed to working with the people of Iseyin to harness this potential for the benefit of all,” Governor Makinde stated, even as the controversy surrounding the selection process deepens.
