Nigerians will show politicians pepper in 2027 — Makinde predicts

Seyi Makinde has expressed confidence that voter behaviour in Nigeria’s 2027 elections will reflect stronger independence from political influence, arguing that electoral outcomes will no longer be dictated by power blocs.

He made the statement on Wednesday at the Oyo State Tourism Summit held at the International Conference Centre in Ibadan, where he spoke on elections, governance continuity, and political succession in the state.

Makinde said the influence of federal power would not determine the next general elections, insisting that citizens are increasingly prepared to assert their choices at the polls.

> “I believe that this election cycle, federal might will not work. It has worked in Ekiti state in both instances but this time around, Nigerians will show politicians pepper,” he said.

He added that political engagement among citizens has changed and voters are no longer willing to remain passive in deciding leadership outcomes.

> “They will show us that they don’t want to be bystanders anymore; they will participate, and I’m sure of what I’m saying.”

On governance in Oyo State after his tenure, Makinde said his administration has focused on building systems that can continue beyond individual leadership transitions. He noted that while he may offer guidance on succession, the final decision will rest with voters.

> “I tell people that I will recommend for Oyo state people, but the decision will rest with the people of Oyo state,” he said.

He cautioned that leadership choices carry long-term consequences for development, stressing the importance of selecting candidates with capacity to govern effectively.

> “But if you make a mistake and bring someone who will not do good work, it is a one-day event, but the impact will last four years,” he added.

Makinde also addressed speculation around possible succession alignments, stating that his support would be based on competence and commitment to the state rather than party background.

He reiterated that the focus of his administration is to strengthen governance structures in Oyo State to ensure continuity and stability beyond his tenure.
