Defamation: Farotimi Speaks After Release from Prison
Human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has spoken out following his release from prison in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Tuesday, after being incarcerated on charges of defamation and cybercrime. Farotimi, who had been detained since December 4, 2024, expressed his gratitude to supporters and those who advocated for his release, affirming his commitment to truth and justice.
In his first public statement after his release, Farotimi emphasized that his journey had never been easy, especially while fighting against what he described as “evil.” He recalled a defining moment years ago when he felt a divine message urging him to fight for truth. “God spoke to me very clearly,” Farotimi said. “I heard Him say, ‘Once has it been spoken: the truth is the only weapon by which you can slay the monster called Nigeria.'”
He reiterated that throughout his public advocacy and legal battles, he had never lied about anyone and that truth had always been his guiding principle. “In my fight, and my wars against this evil empire that we all live in, I have never lied against anyone,” he said.
Farotimi was abducted from Lagos State and transferred to Ekiti State, where he faced allegations that led to his imprisonment. However, after a series of legal challenges, he was able to perfect his bail conditions on Tuesday and was promptly released. He returned to Lagos with a renewed sense of determination to continue his work in human rights advocacy.
Expressing deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by his supporters, Farotimi thanked them for standing by him throughout the ordeal. “May the grace of God find and locate you wherever you are,” he said. His release marks a significant moment in his ongoing efforts to challenge injustices and fight for a more just society.
