PDP Crisis: Damagum Should Complete Ayu’s Tenure – Gov Fintiri
The leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the North East zone, comprising Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, Borno, and Yobe states, has thrown its full support behind Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as the party’s Acting National Chairman. This endorsement comes amidst ongoing internal disputes within the party, with various factions expressing differing views on the direction of the party’s leadership.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, speaking on behalf of the North East zone, expressed confidence in Damagum’s leadership since he assumed office, following the suspension of former National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. Fintiri cited a Federal High Court ruling from Abuja, which issued a restraining order preventing any changes to the party’s leadership until the completion of Ayu’s tenure, barring a further court ruling. “Damagum should be allowed to complete Ayu’s tenure, and all party members should respect the court’s decision for the sake of our democracy,” Fintiri urged.
Fintiri commended Damagum for restoring public confidence in the PDP, particularly in the North East. He highlighted the party’s strong performance during the 2023 elections, noting that the zone had delivered unprecedented results at all levels, making it deserving of holding the National Chairman position. “The North East deserves this position more than any other section in the North, and we believe in Damagum’s capacity to lead the party forward,” Fintiri said.
This endorsement aligns the North East zone with other prominent party members who have recently rallied behind Damagum amid ongoing internal tensions. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State also recently declared his full support for Damagum, dismissing calls for a change in leadership and pledging to back any decision Damagum makes to reposition the party.
