Customer Assaults EEDC Officials, Damages Vehicle in Anambra
In a disturbing incident in Enugwu-Nanka community, Orumba North local government area of Anambra State, a customer attacked staff of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for disconnecting his electricity line over unpaid bills. The altercation escalated when the customer, identified as Izuchukwu Ofojama, allegedly damaged the EEDC vehicle during their official assignment.
The confrontation, captured in a viral video, shows Izuchukwu confronting EEDC officials and warning them against disconnecting his electricity. The officials, however, claimed that the property had been consuming electricity illegally and that Izuchukwu could not provide proof of payment.
“When the team proceeded with the disconnection, Izuchukwu became enraged and assaulted the officials. He used a log of wood to smash the front and rear windshields, and side mirrors of their vehicle. He also punctured the rear tires with a screwdriver,” EEDC spokesman Emeka Ezeh reported.
In response to the incident, Rev. Canon Ifeanyichukwu Ezeike, President General of Nanka community, along with Izuchukwu’s brother, Onyekwere Ofojama, visited the EEDC’s Ekwulobia District office to address the situation. Ezeike condemned the attack and expressed the community’s commitment to repairing the damages and resolving the matter amicably.
Ezeh further stated that the EEDC officials, including the Head of Security, Mr. Frank Ejiofor, and Head of Health, Safety & Environment, Dr. Francis Iwu, emphasized the company’s zero-tolerance policy towards such violent actions. Ejiofor stressed the importance of using established channels to address grievances and assured that legal action would be pursued against anyone assaulting EEDC staff.
The EEDC reiterated its commitment to customer service while condemning any form of violence against its personnel.
