Coalition: Reno Reacts to Peter Obi’s One-Term Promise to the North
Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has issued a strong warning to Northern political leaders against supporting Peter Obi as the opposition coalition’s presidential candidate for 2027, claiming Obi would not honor any promises made to the region.
Omokri’s remarks came in response to recent comments by Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, who said he would be willing to serve only one term as president and hand over power to the North. Obi also clarified that there was no agreement yet on a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Taking to social media platform X, Omokri compared Obi’s overtures to the North with historical events in Cameroon, warning that Northerners would face betrayal similar to that experienced by the Hausa-Fulani population in Northern Cameroon after Ahmadou Ahidjo resigned as president in 1982.
“If Arewa makes the mistake of backing the coalition and giving their Presidential ticket to Peter Obi, exactly what happened to Northern Cameroon after Ahmadou Ahidjo resigned on November 4, 1982, is what will happen to Northern Nigeria. Go back and study history,” Omokri wrote.
He accused Obi of remaining silent on security issues affecting Northerners, particularly the killing of Ahmed Gulak in Owerri in 2021, and of never condemning the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or their sit-at-home orders, which have disrupted life in the Southeast.
Omokri also questioned Obi’s trustworthiness, citing his appointment of individuals from the Southeast as campaign coordinators in Northern and Western states during the last election cycle. “A man who could not keep a promise to Ojukwu will now stay true to his pledge to Arewa?” Omokri asked.
In contrast, Omokri described President Bola Tinubu as a true friend of the North, praising Tinubu’s support for former President Muhammadu Buhari and urging Northern leaders to remain cautious in backing any Southern candidate.
Obi has not yet publicly responded to Omokri’s latest remarks.
