Chris Okafor announces month-long break from pulpit, gives reason
Chris Okafor, founder of Grace Nation Ministry, has announced a one-month withdrawal from ministerial duties, effective throughout January.
The cleric made the announcement during the church’s New Year’s Eve service in a video that has since circulated widely online. He told the congregation that the break is for rest, prayer, and personal reflection, with particular attention to his recent marriage.
According to Okafor, the decision follows an intense period that left little time for rest after his wedding. He said he and his wife have not taken a honeymoon and have had no opportunity to step away from public responsibilities since their marriage.
He explained that the period would be used for spiritual retreat, rest, and time with his wife, adding that he plans to return to ministry at the end of the month.
The announcement comes weeks after a public dispute between Okafor and actress Doris Ogala. The controversy began after a video of Okafor’s engagement to Pearl Okafor appeared online.
Ogala alleged that she had been in a romantic relationship with the pastor since 2017. She claimed he encouraged her to leave her former marriage and accused him of abandoning her after years of involvement and assurances of marriage. She later issued an ultimatum, demanding either marriage or financial compensation, eventually stating a claim of N1 billion for breach of promise.
Despite the allegations and public exchanges, Okafor proceeded with his wedding to Pearl Okafor, holding both white and traditional ceremonies.
In the early stages of the controversy, Okafor dismissed Ogala’s claims as a reaction to his marital happiness. However, days later, he publicly apologised to her, acknowledging that her account of their past relationship was true.
