Budget Crisis: Nigeria’s 2024 Financial Plans Shaken as Oil Prices Dip to $76.53

 

Amid the legislative process for the 2024 federal budget, Nigeria encounters a formidable challenge as the price of Bonny Light drops to $76.53 per barrel, casting uncertainty over the execution of next year’s financial plan.

The 2024 budget, pegged at $77.96 per barrel and 1.78 million barrels per day, is now under scrutiny due to fluctuating global oil market dynamics, particularly the decline in Bonny Light prices, prompting concerns among stakeholders regarding funding sustainability.

Recent data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission reveals a 7.4% decline in oil production to 1.25 million barrels per day in November. Despite efforts against oil theft, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd reports ongoing challenges, uncovering illegal refineries and vessels involved in theft.

The National President of the Oil and Gas Service Providers association of Nigeria, Mazi Colman Obasi, emphasizes the urgent need for diversification and intensified efforts against oil theft to safeguard Nigeria’s economy.

While concerns heighten, Minister of State Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, remains optimistic, stating that oil production could surpass the 2024 budget target. He pledges government commitment to addressing challenges and creating an enabling environment for stakeholders.

Nigeria’s crude flow to Europe has increased, filling supply gaps left by the ban on Russian crude. Executive Director of Crude and Condensate at NNPC Trading Limited, Maryamu Idris, highlights the growing importance of Nigerian grades in Europe and the efforts to address challenges in the Niger Delta.

Experts, including Austin Avuru, Founder and Executive Chairman of AA Holdings, call for massive investment in the oil and gas sector to meet future targets. Meanwhile, BudgIT raises concerns over discrepancies in the 2024 budget, calling for a thorough review to ensure transparency and accountability.
