Bloody Rival Cult Clash Claims 8 Lives in Makurdi; One Beheaded

A violent clash between rival red and black cult gangs erupted in the North Bank area of Makurdi town, resulting in eight casualties, including one person who was brutally beheaded.

The confrontation reportedly began on Friday afternoon near the North Bank Market, close to the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME), following a minor disagreement between members of the opposing cult groups. Eyewitnesses revealed that what started as a dispute quickly escalated into a full-blown bloody fight.

An anonymous eyewitness disclosed, “It all started when a member of one cult group visited North Bank Market, near NASME, to make a purchase. Upon encountering members of a rival gang, he was harassed. He informed his friends, leading to a retaliatory confrontation that turned the market into a war zone.”

The violent clashes continued throughout Saturday, as rival gang members hunted each other down. Traders were forced to close their businesses and flee for their lives. Seven individuals have been confirmed dead so far as a result of the clashes.

Calm has now been restored, with the Military, Police, DSS, NSCDC, and other security forces intervening and arresting suspects. The Chairman of North Bank Market, Cibilus Odinaka, confirmed the closure of the market due to the crisis and expressed concerns about the slow response of security personnel.

Odinaka emphasized the need for increased security, stating, “Even if we have six force men, three behind and three in front of the market, it will give the people peace of mind to transact without fear.”

The Commander of Operation Shere, Nura Umar, reported that in addition to the six killed, one victim was beheaded, and the severed head was taken away. The clash primarily involved the red and black cults, with each side claiming casualties. A non-cult member, a commercial motorbike rider, also fell victim to the crossfire.

Security forces, including soldiers, DSS, Police, and Hunters, are now present in North Bank, making arrests and working to ensure lasting peace. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the cult activities, stating that the investigation is ongoing with no specific report on the number of victims at this time.
