Internet Fraud Crackdown: 31 Suspects Convicted, Jailed in Enugu and Awka
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully convicted and sentenced thirty-one individuals in the Federal High Courts of Enugu and Awka. The suspects faced charges related to fraudulent impersonation, obtaining by false pretense, and possession of fraudulent documents.
The convicts, including Pascal Chinedu, Chiemerie Edeh, and Okeke Chiagozie Harrison, were arraigned before Justices Mohammed Garba Umar and Nnamdi Dimgba. All pleaded guilty to the charges brought forth by the EFCC.
The convictions, handed down on February 21 and 22, 2024, resulted in varying jail terms and fines for the perpetrators. Notable sentences include 24 months imprisonment with a fine option of N750,000.00 for Chizoba Onyedika Felix, and 18 months imprisonment with a fine option of N500,000.00 each for Harrison and Chidera Victor Mmadu.
Justice Umar imposed a restitution order on Felix, requiring him to pay back $1,300 to his victim. Other sentences ranged from 12 months imprisonment with a fine option of N500,000.00 to two weeks of community service for different offenders.
The defense counsels, while acknowledging their clients as first-time offenders, pleaded for leniency. However, the EFCC counsels argued for strict sentences, emphasizing the severity of the crimes committed.
In addition to the jail terms, the convicted individuals forfeited mobile phones recovered from them to the Federal Government.
