Biden’s Debate Performance Sparks Panic Among Democrats
President Joe Biden’s debate performance on Thursday night aimed to reassure the nation about his physical and mental fitness. However, from the outset, the 81-year-old president appeared to struggle, often speaking in a weak, raspy voice.
In the initial moments, Biden frequently stumbled over his words, misspoke, and lost his train of thought. One of the most notable instances was when he concluded a rambling statement by saying, “We finally beat Medicare,” before moderators swiftly redirected the debate back to former President Trump.
While Biden seemed to find his rhythm as the debate progressed, he struggled to effectively counter Trump’s attacks. Trump, according to NBC News, unleashed a barrage of misinformation and seized on Biden’s apparent confusion, remarking at one point that he didn’t understand Biden’s comments about the border. “I don’t know if he knows what he said either,” Trump quipped.
Nearly an hour into the debate, Biden’s team attributed his hoarseness to a cold. Despite this, the debate was seen as a crucial moment for Biden’s campaign, which has faced persistent concerns about his age and vitality. Public perception has been further influenced by deceptively edited videos suggesting Biden is confused or disoriented. This debate was Biden’s first significant opportunity since the State of the Union address to counter these narratives.
However, for many Democrats, the debate performance induced panic. One party strategist described it as “collective suicide,” citing Biden’s hoarse voice, tired appearance, and rambling speech as reinforcing voter concerns. “President Biden can’t win. This debate is a nail in the political coffin,” the strategist said.
Despite the shaky start, Biden had some strong moments. “Only one of us is a convicted felon, and I’m looking at him,” Biden said to Trump, a line that reportedly tested well with internal Biden campaign polling.
A Biden aide acknowledged the rocky start but downplayed any significant panic at campaign headquarters in Delaware.
Trump has faced his own questions about age-related decline, with critics noting his tendency to stray off-topic. Biden’s strategy included preparing for “two Trumps” on stage and attempting to provoke the “true Trump” into revealing himself.
The debate featured a new rule muting candidates’ microphones to prevent interruptions, a change from their chaotic first debate in 2020.
Ben Proto, chairman of the Connecticut Republican Party, compared the situation to the 1974 Watergate scandal when Sen. Barry Goldwater told President Richard Nixon he would be convicted by the Senate, leading to Nixon’s resignation. Proto suggested that Democrats might need a similar intervention.
