“Bello Turji Will Soon Be History in the North-West,” Says Nigerian Military
The Nigerian military says notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji is under mounting pressure as intensified security operations target criminal networks in the North-West.
Major General Warrah Idris, Theatre Commander of Joint Task Force North West (Operation Fansan Yamma), told reporters in Zamfara State on Wednesday that Turji is constantly on the move due to sustained military actions, human intelligence, and modern surveillance efforts.
“Current intelligence indicates that Bello Turji and his associates are in a state of confusion, relocating every few hours or days due to the intensity of our operations,” Idris said.
Addressing claims that Turji controls local governments or communities, the commander dismissed such reports as propaganda. “How does someone without a permanent location control an axis or a local government? I challenge Bello Turji to name a single area he controls,” he added.
Idris confirmed that Turji, along with other top bandit leaders including Gwaska, Ado Aleru, and Dogo Gide, is being closely tracked across the region.
The military also refuted rumors of releasing 70 bandits, emphasizing that there is no official directive supporting such claims. Idris warned the public against spreading unverified reports, noting the growing role of AI-generated misinformation.
On cross-border security, Idris highlighted strengthened intelligence cooperation with Niger and Benin Republic to curb armed group movements. He cited last month’s operations near Kamba, where several Lakurawa fighters were neutralized and weapons recovered.
The commander reaffirmed the military’s commitment to combating banditry and terrorism, stressing that challenges are addressed through formal channels. “We are ready to work, get more work, and look for more work,” he said, expressing confidence in the success of ongoing operations.
