Over a dozen persons have been killed in what appears to be reprisal attack on Igangan Community, in Ibarapa Area of Oyo State.
The attack occurred on Saturday night and is coming barely five months after the violent clash between Yoruba natives and Fulani herdsmen in Igangan Community in the area.
Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Wale Osifeso confirmed the incident in a press release.
According to the Police, a yet to be ascertained number of armed assailants invaded Igangan town around 11pm on Saturday with dangerous weapons in a bid to create unrest in the town.
“The unscrupulous elements were however repelled by a combination of Police Operational and tactical assets with local hunters and vigilantes”.
The Police said they do not have accurate figure of fatalities yet.
The Command further said the situation is being closely monitored and investigations are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.
Earlier, the Governor of the State, Seyi Makinde had confirmed the development, pleading for calm among residents.
He said “I have received the shocking news of the attacks on residents of Igangan, Ibarapaland, in the early hours of this morning. “I am currently being briefed on the incidents. I urge residents to remain calm as security operatives are now in control of the situation”.
