Assassination attempt on Israel’s PM as drone launched towards Netanyahu’s residence in central Israel

In a first reported assassination attempt on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a drone was launched towards his residence in Caesarea, northern Israel. Netanyahu’s spokesman confirmed that neither the Prime Minister nor his wife was at home during the attack.

The Israeli military has stated that the drone, which originated from Lebanon, struck a building, though the specific target remains unclear. Alongside the primary drone, two additional drones crossed into Israeli airspace but were successfully intercepted by Israeli defense forces. No casualties were reported, and the Israeli ambulance service confirmed explosions in the area.

At this time, no group has taken responsibility for the drone strike, including Hezbollah, which has been in a state of heightened conflict with Israel since October. Tensions have been running high between the two parties, though Israeli officials have not yet linked the attack to any specific organization.

The incident follows a recent security breach where an Israeli citizen was arrested for allegedly conspiring with Iran to assassinate Netanyahu and other high-ranking officials. The suspect, a businessman with ties to Turkey, is accused of being smuggled into Iran twice to receive payments for espionage activities.

The attack comes amid a period of escalating violence in the region. Just weeks ago, Iran launched over 180 rockets into Israel, sparking concerns of a broader conflict. Netanyahu responded firmly, warning Iran of severe retaliation, stating, “The regime in Iran does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and retaliate against our enemies.”

Since October 8, Hezbollah has launched over 8,000 rockets at Israel in solidarity with Gaza-based Hamas. Tensions intensified further with the recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was behind the October 7 attack that left 1,200 Israelis dead.
