Army Rejects Claims Troops Buy Their Own Uniforms, Insists Personnel Are Fully Equipped

The Nigerian Army has denied allegations that its personnel purchase uniforms and protective gear with personal funds, describing the claims as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, said the military provides all required kits and ensures that soldiers are properly equipped for duty.

The response comes after a viral interview by former soldier Rotimi Olamilekan, popularly known as Soja Boi, who claimed that troops often buy uniforms, boots and bulletproof vests despite receiving low pay.

The Army maintained that it operates a structured remuneration system. According to the statement, personnel receive consolidated monthly salaries, alongside uniform allowances and other benefits. Soldiers deployed to operational areas are also entitled to additional allowances tied to their assignments.

It further stated that uniforms, protective gear, arms and ammunition are supplied through established logistics channels. While acknowledging that some soldiers may choose to purchase extra items for personal comfort, the Army said such decisions are optional and not indicative of any systemic gap.

The military also stressed that no personnel are deployed without appropriate protective equipment. It warned that unverified claims could affect morale and undermine national security, urging the public to treat such reports with caution.

Addressing Olamilekan’s dismissal, the Army said his exit was due to disciplinary violations, including breaches of military social media regulations, and not for expressing personal views.

The clarification follows renewed public attention after Olamilekan alleged in a recent video that he faced detention after criticising political leaders and calling on them to send their children into military service.
