APC’s Amaechi Faction in Limbo as Wike-Fubara Rift Reshapes Political Landscape

In the wake of the escalating political crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, a rapid realignment of political forces is reshaping the landscape. Stakeholders, caught off guard by the swift development, are strategizing their next moves in response to the unfolding dispute.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders and disgruntled All Progressives Party (APC) members are discreetly aligning with Governor Fubara, while others are cautiously observing the situation before pledging their support. Notably, some aggrieved PDP House of Representatives members have already thrown their support behind Fubara.

Wike’s past dominance in both the party and the state is undergoing a seismic shift, altering the political dynamics. The rift between Wike and Fubara has triggered a cascade of changes, impacting both major political parties.

For the PDP, suspicions arise that former state chairman Desmond Akawor may have been offered a federal appointment by President Bola Tinubu to weaken the party. This move, coupled with the dissolution of the state executive, has created internal divisions, paving the way for potential APC influence.

The APC, on the other hand, finds itself in a precarious position with the Amaechi faction in flux. The ongoing power struggle between Amaechi and Wike, former political allies turned rivals, adds complexity to the party’s internal dynamics.

Former national publicity secretary Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze emphasizes Amaechi’s continued leadership within the APC despite challenges. The looming possibility of PDP splinters aligning with the APC, and vice versa, adds uncertainty to the political landscape.

Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, urges Governor Fubara to approach the situation with a receptive stance, emphasizing the need for consultation and careful decision-making in the interest of governance and peace.

As the crisis unfolds, the fate of Rivers State’s political landscape hangs in the balance, with potential realignments and shifts of loyalty on the horizon.
