APC to Parents: Monitor Your Children’s Movements Amid Planned Protests
The All Progressives Congress (APC) issued a warning to parents on Wednesday, urging them to monitor their children’s movements to prevent their involvement in violent activities ahead of a planned nationwide protest.
This caution follows the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s statement on Tuesday, asserting that security forces would not hesitate to make arrests if the protests, scheduled from August 1 to 10, turn violent.
The protests, sparked by rising living costs and economic difficulties, have generated significant tension and mixed reactions across Nigeria.
Speaking after the APC’s 153rd National Working Committee meeting, National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru joined President Bola Tinubu in appealing to those planning the protests to reconsider and trust the government’s efforts to address economic challenges.
“We urge Nigerians to monitor their children’s movements to ensure they are not caught on the wrong side of the law,” Basiru stated. He emphasized that the government is gradually implementing policies to alleviate economic hardships since taking office in 2023.
The NWC acknowledged that some issues raised by protesters are political, while others require constitutional amendments currently underway in the National Assembly.
“We urge those planning the protests to have confidence in the President’s efforts to reposition the economy. We assure Nigerians that these challenges will eventually be resolved,” Basiru added.
An emergency meeting of APC Chairmen from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory has been scheduled for further discussions, although the specific date was not disclosed. The National Deputy Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, confirmed the meeting in an exclusive call, noting that the protest and the state of the nation will be key topics.
