APC Suspends Abia Congresses Amid Speculation Over Alex Otti’s Possible Move

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the suspension of its state, local government, and ward congresses in Abia State, raising speculation about a potential defection by Governor Alex Otti to the ruling party.

In a letter dated February 18, 2026, addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC National Working Committee (NWC) informed the commission of the suspension, citing “ongoing consultations” and the need to complete preparatory and administrative processes. The letter was signed by APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda and National Secretary Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru.

“The All Progressives Congress (APC) hereby formally notifies the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the suspension of the State, Ward and Local Government Congresses of the Party, earlier scheduled to hold, is effective until further notice,” the letter stated. It added that a revised timetable would be communicated in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and relevant party regulations.

While the party did not explicitly link the suspension to any political realignment, sources in Abia suggest the pause may be part of strategic discussions aimed at restructuring the party to accommodate new entrants ahead of upcoming elections. Neither the APC leadership nor Governor Otti has confirmed any defection talks.

Political analysts note that the suspension, combined with the reference to “ongoing consultations,” points to possible internal negotiations. A defection by Governor Otti, currently the only Labour Party governor in Nigeria, could significantly shift the political landscape in Abia State and affect the balance of power ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Reports indicate that APC recently took similar action in Adamawa State amid speculation about Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party potentially joining the party.
