APC Begins Steps to Reinstate Ndume as Senate Chief Whip
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced discussions with the Senate leadership to reinstate Senator Ali Ndume as the Senate Chief Whip. This development follows Ndume’s removal from the position a month ago due to his public criticisms of President Bola Tinubu and the ruling party.
Senator Ndume, representing Borno South, was relieved of his duties after accusing President Tinubu of being insulated from the hardships faced by Nigerians. His statements reportedly angered the APC leadership, leading to his replacement by Senator Tahir Monguno of Borno North. The directive for Ndume’s removal was issued by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and National Secretary Senator Basiru Ajibola, and was swiftly endorsed by the Senate.
Last Tuesday, Ndume met with the APC National Working Committee in Abuja, where he offered an unreserved apology to the party. Following the meeting, Ganduje confirmed that Ndume’s apology was accepted, framing the situation as a “family affair.”
Sources within the APC have since revealed that the party has initiated talks with the Senate leadership to reconsider Ndume’s removal. The Deputy National Organising Secretary of the APC, Nze Chidi Duru, confirmed these consultations, emphasizing that the final decision rests with the Senate leadership.
Duru noted that the APC is a law-abiding party that welcomes members back when they acknowledge their mistakes and adhere to the party’s constitution. He highlighted that Ndume, a senior and respected member of the party, had made amends by apologizing for his previous actions.
In a related statement, APC National Publicity Director Bala Ibrahim stated that the move to reinstate Ndume is not unusual, comparing it to normal cabinet reshuffles in the executive branch. He emphasized that the Senate, under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio, aims to maintain a harmonious environment, and reinstating Ndume could contribute to that goal.
The APC’s internal discussions are ongoing, with backdoor consultations expected to smooth the process. The final decision will ultimately depend on the Senate’s leadership and the broader consensus within the party.
