Shehu Sani’s Claims False, Senators Earn Only ₦1M Monthly – RMAFC

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has challenged former Senator Shehu Sani’s assertion that Nigerian senators receive ₦13.5 million monthly in running costs, in addition to a ₦750,000 salary. In a detailed statement released on Tuesday, RMAFC clarified that senators’ official monthly salary is ₦1,063,860.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also criticized the legislative body’s alleged self-determined salary structure, labeling it as “immoral.” Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu countered, stating that the National Assembly only receives remuneration as determined by RMAFC.

RMAFC Chairman M.B. Shehu outlined the senators’ earnings, including a basic salary of ₦168,866.70 and various allowances totaling ₦1,063,860 per month. Additional non-regular allowances, such as a ₦6,079,200 furniture allowance and severance gratuity, are paid once per tenure, while an optional vehicle allowance loan of ₦8,105,600 must be repaid before the end of a senator’s term.

Shehu emphasized that only the president, vice president, senate president, and House of Representatives speaker receive government housing, a privilege no longer extended to other public or legislative officers.
