Another PDP Federal Lawmaker Quits, Blames Party’s Failure to Offer Credible Opposition to APC
Jamilu Muhammad, the member representing Kankara/Faskari/Sabua Federal Constituency of Katsina State in the House of Representatives, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to provide credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a resignation letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of his ward in Faskari Local Government Area, Muhammad said his decision came after deep reflection and wide consultation. He expressed disappointment over what he described as the party’s deviation from the ideals required to confront Nigeria’s current challenges.
“This decision did not come lightly, but after deep reflection and wide consultation, it has become clear to me that the party no longer represents the type of focused, credible, and united opposition that Nigeria so desperately needs at this critical time,” the letter read.
He criticised the PDP’s lack of cohesion and its muted response to national issues, particularly during the recent re-run election in his constituency. He pointed to the conduct of some party members, whom he accused of engaging in anti-party activities that further fractured party unity.
“More disappointing was the visible anti-party activities by some members of the PDP during the Kankara/Faskari/Sabua Federal Constituency re-run election, which further weakened our common front and exposed cracks that have remained unaddressed,” he added.
Muhammad hinted at joining forces with like-minded individuals across political lines to form a new coalition that prioritises justice, progress, and unity. He expressed appreciation for his time in the PDP but emphasised the need to move beyond party interests in pursuit of a better Nigeria.
His resignation is the latest in a series of high-profile defections from the PDP in recent months. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar announced his departure from the party on Wednesday, followed by media entrepreneur Dele Momodu on Thursday. Both have joined a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), presenting it as a more viable platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
