Anambra: Trailer Crash Claims Five Lives at Eke Awgbu Market
In a tragic incident at Eke Awgbu market in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, five individuals have lost their lives and six others sustained injuries following a devastating trailer crash.
The incident occurred this morning at approximately 9:55 am when a commercial Howo truck, reportedly belonging to BUA but without a registration number, suffered a brake failure. This led to the truck careening off the road and crashing into several other vehicles, including a commercial TVS/Tricycle and a Q/Motorcycle link, both identified by their registration numbers: NZH84LG and OLU245QV, respectively. Additionally, a private Honda/Motorcycle was also involved in the collision.
Margret Onagbe, spokesperson for the Anambra State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the details, dispelling rumors that attributed the accident to the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA). According to Onagbe, eyewitnesses recounted that the truck driver was speeding when the brakes failed, causing him to lose control at a checkpoint and collide with the other vehicles, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and injuries.
Emergency responders from FRSC’s RS5.35 Igboukwu unit swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the aftermath, including clearing the obstruction caused by the crash. Passersby had already rushed the injured victims to Referral Health Centre Awgbu, while the deceased were transported to St Joseph’s Mortuary Adazi Ani.
Sector Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. He emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits to ensure safe travel on the roads.
