Anambra Teen Arrested for Kidnapping and Killing Victim After Ransom Payment
A 19-year-old man, Chimaobi Mbonu, has been arrested for his alleged role in the kidnapping and murder of George Onwurah in Ndiukwuenu village, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The crime occurred in May 2024, and despite a ransom being paid by the victim’s family, Onwurah was tortured and killed by his abductors.
According to a statement released on Friday by Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, Mbonu was apprehended on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at about 10:20 a.m. by officers attached to the Awgbu Divisional Headquarters with the support of local community members.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Mbonu was part of a criminal gang responsible for the abduction and murder. Ikenga noted that while Mbonu is now in custody, other members of the gang remain at large. The suspects reportedly tortured their victim to death even after receiving ransom money.
The police also linked the same gang to the vandalism of a Community Health Care Centre in the village, where they allegedly stole electrical fittings and other valuables. Authorities have launched further operations to track down and arrest the remaining members of the gang.
