SHOCKING: US Lawmaker, Husband Shot Dead in Targeted Attack – Another Politician, Wife Also Shot
Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot dead in what authorities are calling a “targeted act of political violence.” The incident occurred at their home and was confirmed by Governor Tim Walz, who described the attack as deliberate and politically motivated.
In a related attack, state senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot at their residence. Both sustained multiple gunshot wounds and underwent emergency surgery. Governor Walz stated that he is “cautiously optimistic” about their recovery and reiterated the serious nature of what he called an “assassination attempt.”
Authorities are coordinating a multi-agency investigation, with state and federal officials involved. Walz emphasized that those responsible “will be held accountable.”
State Police Chief Mark Bruley revealed that officers responding to the Hoffman residence later checked on Hortman’s home, where they encountered a man dressed in a vest, badge, and taser—impersonating a police officer. He arrived in what appeared to be a legitimate SUV patrol vehicle. When approached, the suspect opened fire on law enforcement officers and retreated into the house. Bruley confirmed the individual was not an actual officer, saying, “No doubt if they were in this room, you would assume they were a police officer.”
A large-scale manhunt is now underway, involving hundreds of officers and SWAT teams. Authorities have urged residents of Brooklyn Park to shelter in place, with thousands currently doing so. While several individuals have been detained for questioning, no arrests have been made.
President Donald Trump responded to the violence in a statement shared by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. He confirmed that Attorney General Pam Bondi and the FBI are leading the federal investigation and promised that anyone involved “will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” The president condemned the shootings, stating, “Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God bless the great people of Minnesota; it is a truly great place.”
