Anambra Police Commissioner Leads Anti-Sit-at-Home Patrol Amid Tensions
In a move to counter the continued enforcement of sit-at-home orders by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Anambra State Police Commissioner Nnaghe Itam led a high-profile patrol in Awka South Local Government Area on Monday. The patrol is part of intensified efforts by law enforcement to restore public order and ensure residents can safely engage in daily activities.
The sit-at-home mandate, imposed by IPOB in southeastern Nigeria, has severely impacted local economies, restricting residents from participating in regular business and social activities. IPOB has enforced the order weekly as a protest against the detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
During a briefing in Awka, Anambra’s capital, Commissioner Itam assured the public that police efforts are underway to apprehend those responsible for recent violent incidents in the area, including the tragic killing of 22 people in the communities of Nibo and Ifite Awka, both located in Awka South LGA. The attacks, which took place on October 20 and October 25, involved suspected gunmen who targeted locals during a festival and other community gatherings, resulting in 15 fatalities in Nibo and seven in Ifite Awka.
“Our command is on the trail of certain suspects linked to these brutal killings,” Itam said. He also emphasized the importance of community collaboration, urging traditional rulers and community leaders to work closely with police to maintain peace and security.
In addition to Awka, the commissioner extended the anti-sit-at-home patrol to other areas including Ogidi, Obosi, Okpoko, Harbour, and Awada. The proactive measures aim to reassure residents and deter further disruptions to public life.
