New Terror Group ‘Lakurawas’ Emerges in Sokoto, Deputy Governor Raises Alarm
Sokoto State’s Deputy Governor, Idris Gobir, has announced the emergence of a new terror group known as the “Lakurawas,” sparking concerns over escalating insecurity in the region. Gobir raised the alarm while addressing participants of the National Defence College’s Course 33, who are conducting a study tour in Sokoto to examine the state’s security challenges.
Deputy Governor Gobir described Lakurawas as a “faith-based idealist group” operating with advanced weaponry, noting their activities span across five local government areas. The emergence of this group further complicates security efforts as Sokoto State is already grappling with pervasive banditry that threatens the stability of the region.
“This new threat expands the already challenging security landscape,” Gobir stated, adding that the state government is collaborating closely with federal security agencies to combat the growing threats to life and property. He highlighted ongoing initiatives led by the state to bolster security and acknowledged the critical role that these agencies play in the fight against violent groups.
Gobir expressed hope that insights gained from the National Defence College’s study tour would aid in shaping effective strategies to counter the spread of violence and ensure safety for residents. He emphasized the government’s commitment to securing peaceful coexistence and underscored the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing these evolving security threats.
