New Terror Group “Lakurawas” Takes Over 5 Sokoto LGAs, Enforces Zakat Collection
A newly identified terror group, known as Lakurawas or Mujahidin, has gained a foothold in five local government areas (LGAs) of Sokoto State, reportedly collecting zakat (a form of almsgiving) and other levies from local communities. The militant group, which moves in large, armed units, has established an extensive network across Tangaza, Gada, Illela, Silame, and Binji LGAs, according to reports from affected residents and local officials.
Eyewitnesses describe the group’s approach as both organized and intimidating, often arriving on 10 to 15 motorcycles. Residents report that upon arrival, the group assesses the community’s environment before leaving designated members behind to oversee and enforce the collection of levies as they proceed to other towns.
Local sources reveal that Lakurawas militants use a mix of languages—Hausa, Fulani, Tuareg, Kanuri, Tuba, and English—enabling them to communicate effectively across ethnic groups in the region. The militants demand payment in the form of crops, livestock, or food, reportedly confiscating animals from those who resist.
Alhaji Isa Salihu Kalenjeni, Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area, has confirmed the group’s presence and coercive methods. “They are forcing people to pay zakat and robbing them of their belongings. Just recently, they robbed a shop owner of N2 million, seizing his car as well. The vehicle was returned only after a payment of N350,000,” Kalenjeni shared.
In response, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, has acknowledged that the group is linked to ISIS-affiliated networks in the Sahel region. He emphasized that Nigeria’s porous borders with Niger and Mali have contributed to the group’s movements and growing influence. “This is a familiar scenario, similar to the early days of Boko Haram. But this time, we are acting swiftly to neutralize them. If citizens observe suspicious activity, they must report it to authorities immediately,” Gen. Buba stated.
He further highlighted that the recent military coup in Niger disrupted joint security operations along the border, allowing militant movements into Sokoto and Kebbi states. Gen. Buba reassured that Nigerian forces are actively identifying and addressing the group’s strongholds.
The Nigerian military urges civilians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or individuals, stressing that early intervention is crucial to prevent an escalation.
