Anambra Police Arrest Vigilante With Gun Hidden in Rice Bag

The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a vigilante member for concealing a pump-action gun inside a rice bag, raising concerns over the misuse of security roles within the state.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Enediong Bassey from Ikono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, was arrested last Thursday at approximately 6:38 pm in Nkwelle-Ezunaka. The operation was carried out by a team led by CSP Emeka Obi from the 3-3 Divisional Headquarters’ anti-crime squad.

During initial interrogation, Bassey admitted to being a vigilante member. However, he revealed that he intended to abscond with the firearm to join a criminal gang involved in armed robbery and other illicit activities.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, emphasized the importance of thoroughly profiling vigilante members and other security operatives assisting the police in combating crime. He reiterated that unprofessional conduct within these groups undermines public safety and community trust.

“In line with the principles of community policing, the Commissioner has stressed the need for proper screening of all individuals supporting security operations in the state,” Ikenga stated.

The suspect has been transferred to the Anti-Robbery Squad for further investigation.
